The literary visionary Octavia E. Butler meticulously created new worlds, but she also painstakingly crafted herself into a writer. The Pasadena native and Altadena resident came of age in a

climate-challenged Southern California that informed and inspired her imagination: “My teachers always did claim that I seemed in another world.”
